I’m watching BBC Kingdoms – it’s a really fun documentary series, narrated by national treasure David Attenborough, about four groups of predators in an national park in Zambia competing for resources and dominance. It was described in the New Scientist as having Game of Thrones level drama (I haven’t watch GoT but its reputation for compelling drama absolutely precedes it). There’s a lion pride, a dog pack, a leopard family, and a hyena clan. They all interact in interesting ways, some of them have the luxury to be bold, while others must be very cautious and evasive. I never realised how important being up in the trees is for leopards, it really keeps them safe.
I was really captivated by a lot of the animals in it – I hope to have a go at drawing all of them at some point. Of course, knowing me, I was most taken by the wild dogs. They are adorable and I love watching highly social animals interact. There are some really compelling moments of teamwork from the pack. I particularly like the rescue they performed when a den collapsed.
So I have spent the last few days dedicatedly drawing a bunch of them. I got my reference photos from Wanderlust Magazine. I was experimenting with mediums I am very inexperienced with, I have just bought a big pack of paint pens and a smaller pack of glitter pens, and I have gained access to a pack of alcohol markers. I’ve not used any of these much before, so I was just exploring and having fun. Without further ado, here’s what I made:
