This is some of the first art I started doing as I recovered from sepsis. It was a good project because I got to play with supplies without having to think very hard. It was a change to experiment with colour palettes and compositions to see what I like, without being distracted by any more figurative aspects.
The process is this:
- On a piece of watercolour paper, Scribble some colours down with water soluble crayons.
- With a wet paintbrush, activate all the pigment on the paper and push it around to blend the colours to your satisfaction.
- Drip some acrylic ink onto the wet, allowing it to spread into the other colours.
- Leave to dry.
- Once dry, go over with pens to add more patterns on top with paint pens and whatever other supplies you feel like.
I did this on a bunch of postcards so I had lots of little art pieces to play with. Here’s what came out of that:
Zine: Explorations of Splodge

I stuck my first few into a zine titled “Explorations of Splodge”. This is actually the first zine I think I have made. It was a very cool feeling to have a whole completed booklet that I made.
Collection: Life in Space

I made these splodges all with a vaguely biological and spacey theme to them so I stuck them onto a page together. I like this, it looks very fancy.
Miscellaneous: Using Them Up
I made a LOT of these splodges, so I started coming up with different creative uses for them. Here are a few of those:

I drew a vase of flowers that was sat on the table in front of me. The splodge in the background gives the piece lots of energy and life. I think I like my art to have a messy element to it like that.

I had one piece that I really liked the base splodge of, but I couldn’t think of what to add over it. So instead of adding stuff on top, I sliced it up to use for collage. To be honest, I don’t like how this one turned out. The blue and pink piece was lovely, and I also loved the patterns and drama of the ink splodges on the top piece. But they don’t really compliment each other. I think this concept would work better with more finely sliced pieces and colours that compliment each other better.

On this piece I painted a lizard! I haven’t done much acrylic painting in a while, and I don’t think I have ever drawn or painted a lizard before, so I am really really happy with how this turned out! What a cute lil fella! It was quite challenging doing this painting during the heatwave in May as the paint kept drying while I was trying to use it.
